เปียโนกับคีย์บอร์ด

แอนน โฮเฮ้นเคิรค, ALCM Member of the ISM (Incorporated Society of Musicians) กล่าวไว้ว่า ดิฉันเป็นครูสอนดนตรีมากว่า 35 ปี สอนทั้งวิชาเปียโนและวิชาคีย์บอร์ด สมัยที่เริ่มสอนยังไม่มีการค้นพบคีย์บอร์ด เพราะฉะนั้น นักเรียนที่ต้องการเรียนเปียโนก็จะต้องมีเปียโนไว้ที่บ้านเพื่อใช้ฝึกซ้อมเท่านั้น หลายปีผ่านมา ได้มีการค้นพบคีย์บอร์ดและคีย์บอร์ดได้กลายมาเป็นเครื่องดนตรีที่เป็นที่นิยม อย่างไรก็ตามเปียโนและคีย์บอร์ดเป็นเครื่องดนตรีที่แตกต่างกัน ถ้าถามว่า “ดิฉันจะสนับสนุนผู้ปกครองให้ซื้อคีย์บอร์ดเพื่อให้เด็กนักเรียนเปียโนฝึกซ้อมหรือไม่” คำตอบคือ ไม่ค่ะ เพราะเทคนิคในการเล่นเครื่องดนตรีทั้งสองชนิดนี้ต่างกันมาก

เมื่อเด็กเริ่มเรียนเปียโน เด็กจะได้ฟังความไพเราะจากการควบคุมเสียงดัง เสียงเบา เมื่อเรียนสูงขึ้นเด็กก็จะค้นพบสีสันของดนตรี สำหรับคีย์บอร์ดแล้ว มันไม่สามารถควบคุมเสียงดัง เสียงเบาได้ดี ไม่ว่าจะกดหนักหรือเบาเท่าไหร่ ก็ไม่สามารถทำให้เกิดระดับเสียงที่แตกต่าง ถึงแม้คีย์บอร์ดเป็นคีย์บอร์ดที่แพง สามารถให้สัมผัสโต้ตอบที่ดี นักเรียนแทบจะไม่ต้องแรงจากข้อมือหรือแขนเมื่อเล่น เพราะฉะนั้น หากนักเรียนฝึกซ้อมด้วยคีย์บอร์ดและเมื่อมาเรียนใช้เปียโน นักเรียนก็จะไม่สามารถควบคุมน้ำหนักของเปียโนได้ คีย์บอร์ดเองก็จะมีแค่ 5 ออคเทฟ และไม่เหมาะกับเพลงเปียโนหลายๆ เพลง

คีย์บอร์ดเป็นเครื่องดนตรีที่ยอดเยี่ยม ซึ่งดิฉันได้เล่นและสอนมาหลายปี แต่มันก็เป็นเครื่องดนตรีที่แตกต่างกับเปียโนโดยสิ้นเชิง เพราะฉะนั้นคีย์บอร์ดจึงเหมาะสมกับนักเรียนที่เรียนคีย์บอร์ดเท่านั้น

I have been a music teacher for over 35 years, teaching both piano and electronic keyboard. When I first started teaching, the electronic keyboard, as we now know it, had not been invented, and so students who wanted to learn to play on the piano had a piano at home to practice on. Over the years many changes have taken place, and the keyboard has become a very popular instrument to play. However, they are two completely different instruments, and need to be treated in different ways.

Would I encourage a parent to buy a keyboard for a student who wants to learn to play the piano? The simple answer is no, as the playing techniques required for the two instruments are so different from each other.

When a child learns to play a piano, they experience, from the very first lesson, the joy of dynamic control. They learn, as they progress through their lessons, how to shape their music with a wide variety of tonal colours. Many electronic keyboards, on the other hand, are not touch sensitive, and so not matter how firm or how gentle a player is with them, they cannot achieve dynamic variations. The more expensive keyboards are, however, touch responsive, but they require far less wrist and arm weight when playing. So, if a student practices on a keyboard, and then plays a piano at their lesson, they struggle to achieve confident overall control of the instrument. Many keyboards also only have 5 octaves, and are therefore not suitable for many piano pieces.

The keyboard is a magnificent instrument – I have played and taught it for many years. However, it is totally different from the piano, and as such, should really only be used if the student is going to follow an electronic keyboard curriculum.
